ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled to St. Catherine University for the season's second road game. The Wildcats were picked to finish seventh in this year's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Preseason Poll. The Eagles put together a very strong three quarters, but ultimately fell 44-55 to the Wildcats.
The Eagles fall to 0-4 on the year after facing four hard-hitting opponents. St. Kates moves to 2-1 this season, their first win being over Chapman University.
Northwestern trailed in the first quarter by three (14-17) followed by a seven point run to take the lead off of a three pointer by
Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian). The two teams would take turns with the lead before
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) would swish a three pointer to put the Eagles up by one at the half.
Third quarter play began similarly as the Eagles battled hard defensively and but were held offensively to only 6 points. St. Kates outscored Northwestern in the third which became hard for the Eagles. Buckets were made for each team in the fourth but UNW was unable to catch up.
Each team shot well from the floor overall – Northwestern shooting 71.4% and the Wildcats just above at 72.7%. St. Kates as able to score 15 points off of UNW's turnovers.
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the Eagles with 15 points, 3 rebounds as
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) had 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Eagles next contest will be Tuesday Nov. 19 as they travel down Snelling Ave to take on Macalester College at 7 p.m.
