Women's Basketball Soars in Electric Overtime Winner Against Macalester

ST. PAUL, MINN – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled a few miles down Snelling Ave to play in another tough Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup. The Eagles took on the Scots of Macalester College Tuesday night. Neither team had a win yet this season. Following a close first half of play, the Eagles would overcome a 12 point deficit in the third to clench their first win of the season in overtime play, 79-68.

Macalester falls to 0-3 overall while Northwestern becomes 1-4 on the season.

First quarter play went back and forth between the teams and ended with a Northwestern three point lead. Brooklyn DeKam (Edgerton, Minn./Southwest MN Christian) and Miranda Crenshaw (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) each scored four points to lead the Eagles.

Second quarter was similar as the Eagles would continue to take the lead from the Scots multiple times. Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) scored a basket in the paint to put the Eagles up by three before Macalester would get a bucket before the buzzer for a one point UNW lead.

Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) ended the half with seven points while Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) led the Eagles with five rebounds.

The Eagles returned for second half action to continue playing tough basketball. Northwestern would start right off the bat with a nine point run before the Scots would score on a free throw. The Eagles would continue to pull a way but somehow Macalester would muster up points to tie the score multiple times. Third quarter action would conclude with a three point Scots lead heading into the fourth.

The Scots would add to this lead and go on a nine point run before Courtney Schmidt (Spring Valley, Minn./Kingsland) would score a jumper for the Eagles. Northwestern's defense would pay off as they continued to battle and slowly cut down the Macalester lead.

The Eagles dug themselves out of the hole they were in to go up by two before Macalester would tie the game on a pair of free throws to send the contest into overtime.

From the start of overtime to the end, the Eagles showed determination and did not give up. The Eagles would score six before Macalester completed a fast break play to cut the lead to four. Northwestern continued to hold their lead through the end of overtime.

Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) led the Eagles scoring 15 points, adding 4 assists and 7 rebounds. Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) added 15 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) would add 13 points while grabbing 7 rebounds on the night. Northwestern scored 17 points off of Macalester turnovers.

The Eagles secure their first win of the 2019-20 season and get ready to take on Grinnell College of Iowa this coming Saturday in the Ericksen center at 3 p.m.
