Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Brendan Reu

Men’s Soccer Falls to UW-Superior Tuesday Afternoon

SUPERIOR, WIS. -  The UNW men's soccer team crossed the border into Wisconsin to take on the current Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) leader, UW-Superior Yellowjackets. The Yellowjackets were an undefeated 7-0 and sitting atop the UMAC standings heading into this contest, while the Eagles rested in 5th with a 2-3 conference record. This was the 16th matchup between the two programs, with UWS leading the series 5-9-1. UW-Superior notched another mark in the win column this afternoon, defeating UNW by a final score of 6-1.

The Yellowjackets were able to net two goals before the 20 minute mark to get the game started. Tim Meyer (Ashland, Wis./Ashland High School) and Cole Alfrey (Elkhorn, Neb./Elkhorn) each had shots on net trying to answer back, but they failed to get past the UWS keeper. The Eagle defense fended off the Yellowjacket attack the remainder of the half, with the halftime score being 2-0 in favor of the home team.

UW-Superior did not waste any time, opening the second half with a goal less than a minute into period. They would go on to net two more goals before Northwestern got on the scoreboard. Joshua Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) was able to finally find the back of the net for UNW in the 68th minute off of an assist from Austin Myers (Chester, Virg./Thomas Dale), making the score 5-1. Superior would score the final goal of the game just seconds before the game ended to reach the final score of 6-1.

The Eagles will return home this Saturday, October 26 against Crown College for their last home contest, where the seniors will be recognized for their time with the Northwestern program. For all things UNW soccer, fans can visit www.unweagles.com and follow @unwmsoc on Twitter and Instagram.
