Men’s Soccer Defeated by Knights on the Road

NEW ULM, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team traveled southward to take on the Knights of Martin Luther College in a Saturday afternoon Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) contest. The Eagles looked to get back-on-track against UMAC opponents, but the Knights were able to outlast UNW and defeat them by a final score of 2-0. Northwestern drops to 2-3-0 in UMAC play and 3-12-1 overall, and rests in the middle of the conference standings at 5th place.

The Eagles appeared to dominate the first half, out-shooting the Knights 13 to five in the opening frame. The UNW squad saw seven of those shots on goal, but was unable to find the back of the net. The Northwestern defense would hold off the MLC attack as well, with the game being scoreless going into halftime.

Northwestern would again have the advantage on shots in the second half, out-pacing Martin Luther 20-3, with six of those shots being on-target. As a team, UNW would finish with 33 shots and 13 shots-on-goal in the game. Martin Luther, on the other hand, would have just three shots in the second half. The Knights were able to capitalize on two of those shots, scoring two goals in the after the 60-minute mark to reach the 2-0 final score.

Miguel Martinez-Urrutia (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) and Tim Meyer (Ashland, Wis./Ashland High School) each tallied six shots for the UNW offense to lead the attack. In net, Austin Gunkel (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View) tallied three saves on the contest.

The Eagles are on the road again next week, taking on UW-Superior on Tuesday, October 22. For all things UNW soccer, fans can visit www.unweagles.com and follow @unwmsoc on Twitter and Instagram.
