MORRIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern football team picked up their second UMAC win Saturday night, defeating the University of Minnesota Morris.
Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) had two touchdowns to lead the Eagles to a 23-13 win over the Cougars on the road.
Northwestern moves to 2-5 on the year and 2-3 in the UMAC. Morris falls to 1-5 overall, 1-3 in conference action.
The Eagles got on the board with 7:37 left in the first quarter when
Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) scored on a 1-yard touchdown run. Following the touchdown run,
Blake Mitchell (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) missed the extra point to keep the score at 6-0.
Bowdry was at it again when he capped off a 13-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run with 10:18 left in the first half. This time, Mitchell connected on the extra point to give the Eagles a 13-0 lead.
The score remained 13-0 until
Blake Mitchell (Watertown, S.D./Watertown) connected on a 31-yard field goal with 12:30 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Cougars rallied in the fourth quarter, first scoring on a three-yard touchdown run. The Eagle defense held off Morris's two-point conversion attempt.
On the next UMN Morris drive, the Cougars were able to score again, bringing them within three at 16-13 with 6:03 to play in regulation.
Northwestern remained steady as sophomore quarterback
Damon Clapper (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center - Grimes) threw a 15-yard touchdown to
KJ Downey (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) to put the Eagles up 23-13 with 2:50 to play and ultimately, secure the win.
Bowdry led the running efforts, picking up 135 yards on 26 attempts with two touchdowns. Bowdry is tied for the most rushing touchdowns in the UMAC with seven this season.
Ryan Flanigan (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) completed seven passes for 101 yards, while
Damon Clapper (Dallas Center, Iowa/Dallas Center - Grimes) added 36 passing yards and ran for 54.
On the defensive end,
George Obitz (Florence, Ariz./Florence) led
the Eagles with 12 tackles and an interception. Seth Johnson (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) also had an interception, returning it 18-yards. Yannick Kabamba (Los Angeles, Calif./Norwalk) recorded the Eagles third interception.
Northwestern will return to action on Saturday, Oct. 26 when they travel to New Ulm, Minnesota to take on UMAC leader, Martin Luther. Kickoff against the Knights is slated for 2 p.m.
