UNW Falls Short Against UMAC Leading Martin Luther, 41-20

NEW ULM, Minn. – The University of Northwestern football team matched up with UMAC leader, Martin Luther, in Saturday afternoon action. Following a close first half, the Knights scored 24 second half points to secure a 41-20 final win.

Northwestern moves to 2-6 on the year and 2-4 in the UMAC. Martin Luther improves to 6-1 overall, and a perfect 5-0 in conference action.

The Knights were first to get on the board – connecting on a 24-yard field goal with 5:57 on the clock in the first. They added the first touchdown of the game three minutes later to take a 10-0 lead.

Northwestern battled back, capitalizing on their running game. Payton Bowdry (Minneapolis, Minn./South) ran 17 times for 58 yards and a touchdown in the opening half, but the Knights ran for 105 yards on the way to a 17-7 lead at the break.

The Knights began to take the game over in the third quarter on both sides of the ball. Martin Luther's Ian Paulsen sacked sophomore quarterback Ryan Flanigan (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) for a safety to push the Knights' lead to 19-7.

The Eagles continued to battle and added two touchdowns in the second half. First on a 54-yard touchdown reception from Ryan Flanigan (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) to Evan Pruitt (Temecula, Calif./Rancho Christian) and then on a 25-yard Flanigan to KJ Downey (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) pass. Unfortunately, the UMAC leader continued to put points on the board to secure the 41-20 win.

Ryan Flanigan (River Falls, Wis./River Falls) completed 15 passes for 219 yards, but Martin Luther came away with three interceptions.

On the defensive end, George Obitz (Florence, Ariz./Florence) led the Eagles with 12 tackles. Chase Marlenee (Northfield, Minn./Northfield) added 10 tackles on the day, while Bradly Kulinski (Milwaukee, Wis./Martin Luther) finished with nine and one for a loss of a yard.

Northwestern will have a bye week before returning to Reynolds Field on Saturday, Nov. 9 when they welcome Westminster College. Kickoff is slated for 12 p.m. noon – marking UNW's final home game of the 2019 season.
