ST. PAUL, Minn. – After seven straight matches on the road, the University of Northwestern volleyball team welcomed Northland College to the Ericksen Center for Saturday UMAC action. The Eagles committed just five hitting errors in the match and hit over .400 as a team to cruise to a quick three-set win. The win marked UNW's 46th straight over the Lumberjills.
Northwestern moves to 12-7 on the year, 3-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. Northland falls to 6-14 overall, 0-3 in conference action.
It was smooth sailing from the start as the Eagles put together a 7-0 and 10-0 run to lead 23-8. It was a well-rounded offensive effort from Northwestern that featured multiple kills from
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian),
Gabrielle Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur),
Lucy Pelzel (St. Joseph, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) and
Soleil Newland (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids - Rice). The Eagles also added three service aces in the first set alone.
UNW continued to control the match in sets two and three.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) recorded four kills in set two, hitting .400, while
Soleil Newland (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids - Rice) was credited with three blocks in the set. The Eagles were dominant in set three, hitting .444 as a team with just one attack error.
Hope Kapelke (Fort Atkinson, Wisc./Fort Atkinson) and
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) had three kills apiece in the set.
Gabrielle Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur) led Northwestern with eight kills on the night.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 14 assists and
Hope Kapelke (Fort Atkinson, Wisc./Fort Atkinson) added 10.
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) added a team-best 13 digs.
