MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team made the short trip to North Central University for the Eagles second UMAC match-up of the day. UNW recorded nine aces enroute to another 3-0 sweep in Saturday action. Final set scores came in at: 25-15, 25-17 and 25-14.
Northwestern moves to 13-7 on the year, 4-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference. North Central falls to 9-9 overall, 1-2 in conference action.
In what started as a competitive first set, the Eagles broke away as the Rams suffered 11 hitting errors. Set two was all tied up at 14 apiece before
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) started a UNW run with a service ace and
Kendra Hardy (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria),
Soleil Newland (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids - Rice) and
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) followed up with kills. The Eagles put together an even bigger run (6-0), highlighted by three consecutive kills from
Gabrielle Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur) to lead 24-16.
Soleil Newland (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids - Rice) finished off the set with a kill of her own.
Northwestern finished the match with their most dominant set of the day, a 25-14 win.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) and
Gabrielle Straub (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur) led UNW offensively, finishing with seven kills apiece. Newland and Hardy added five.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) recorded a team-best 11 digs, while
Marylyn Schroyer (Ft. Collins, Colo./Ft. Collins) added 10.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACRAY) dished out 22 assists in the three-setter.
Northwestern leads the UMAC in hitting percentage this season (.209).
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) and
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Christian) are in the top three in the league for kills/set.
Northwestern will return to action on Oct. 18 and 19 when they compete in the North Jersey Challenge at Kean University. The Eagles will play four matches in Union, New Jersey against Hunter College, Hamilton College, Kean University and University of Scranton.
