ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team was able to pick up their first conference win, hosting the Northland College Lumberjacks (0-4-1) this afternoon at Reynolds Field. The Eagles defeated Northland by a final score of 4-0, moving their record to 2-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.
Northwestern came out firing in the first half, launching 18 shots at the Northland defense. Sophomore midfielder
Austin Myers (Chester, Virg./Thomas Dale) jumpstarted the scoring efforts for UNW with a 35 yard strike. Northwestern was able to tack on another goal from
Corbin Munger (Austin, Minn./Austin) from a
Grecia Burns-Cadotte (Minneapolis, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) assist. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead entering intermission.
UNW continued to apply the offensive pressure in the second half, firing 11 additional shots. Early in second-half play,
Miguel Martinez-Urrutia (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) netted his first career goal, assisted by
Makena Tanko (Kalispell, Mont./Flathead) to give the Eagles a 3-0 advantage. Martinez-Urrutia wasn't done yet, he managed to find the net again to secure the Eagles fourth and final goal and Saturday's home-field win.
Northwestern leads Northland 25-15-2 in all-time head to head records – their last loss occurring in 2009.
