ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 15 University of Northwestern (3-1 overall) closed out day two of tournament action at the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational with two big wins over Wartburg College and Concordia-Moorhead. Wartburg entered the match with a perfect 3-0 record, having received votes in the Preseason AVCA Coaches' Poll. Concordia finished the weekend going 2-2 overall.
UNW 3, Wartburg 1 (30-28, 27-29, 25-14, 25-23)
The Eagles' four-set win showcased another dominant performance by
Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata). Leading the team with 26 kills, three blocks and 16 digs, the senior outside hitter displayed veteran consistency in tournament play. Halvorsen recorded a kill on the 27
th, 29
th and 30
th points in the Eagles set one, 30-28 battle.
Northwestern fell in a close second set before easing into third and fourth set victories.
Sophomore
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) stepped into the libero role and played excellent volleyball – recording 23 digs for the Eagles defense. Freshman
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) tacked on 52 assists and 13 digs.
UNW 3, Concordia-Moorhead 0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-22)
Coming off an exciting victory over Wartburg, the Eagles kept their stride – shutting down Concordia in three sets. This time led by
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian), who recorded 15 kills on 30 total attempts and two blocks. Halvorsen added 13 kills and
Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) connected on 11 kills and dug up 11 balls.
The Eagles will return to play on Wednesday, September 5
th as they play host to St. Olaf College in a 7 p.m. match-up.
