St. Paul, Minn. – No. 14 University of Northwestern matched up against an undefeated St. Olaf volleyball team in Wednesday night action at the Ericksen Center. The Eagles move to 4-1 overall and the Oles fall to 4-1 on the year.
While the statistics reveal a fairly evenly matched contest between the teams, the Eagles committed six less errors than St. Olaf – guiding them to a 3-1 win by set scores of 25-21, 26-24, 22-25 and 25-23.
Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata),
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) and
Hope Kapelke (Ft. Atkinson, Wisc./Ft. Atkinson) each recorded double-digit kill totals on the night, as Halvorsen led with a match-high 16, Fuglestad added 15 and Kapelke finished with 10.
Halvorsen also added 12 digs to record her fourth straight double-double this season.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) dished out 48 assists in the four-set match.
The Eagles soared in one particular defensive category – racking up 16 blocks led by Fuglestad with seven.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) led in digs with 16, followed by
Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) (12) and Halvorsen.
UNW will return to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 8 as they travel to Dubuque, Iowa to compete in the Loras Tournament.
