Baseball Nearly Completes Sweep at CSS

DULUTH, Minn. – The University of Northwestern baseball team (8-15, 3-3) put together an outstanding effort Thursday at Wade Stadium, as the Eagles nearly completed a sweep of host St. Scholastica (9-6, 3-1). UNW cruised to an 11-4 win in the opener before dropping an extra-inning heartbreaker, 5-4, in game two.

Game One
Backed by a six-run fourth and Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool)'s strong outing on the bump, the Eagles knocked off the Saints on their home turf, 11-4.

Morrell went 7.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on just five hits. Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) then came in and got the final four outs to close the door.

Morrell also helped his own cause at the plate, racking up three hits and three RBI to along with a run. Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau), Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) and Ehnstrom all posted two hits apiece and Michaelson and Krahn posted a pair of RBI.

Game Two
The Eagles plated their four runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead before the Saints scratched a run across in the sixth and seventh to knot the game at 4-4 and force extras. CSS then pushed the game-winning run across in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the win.

Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South)'s RBI bunt-single drove in the first run before Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) laced an RBI single. Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Spencer and Lindow touched home thanks to a wild pitch.

Nick Fladager (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) got the nod on the hill, tossing the first six innings. He allowed three earned runs on six hits, while fanning four. Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) was tagged with the loss.

The Eagles will have a quick turnaround, as they will return home Friday to host UW-Superior in another UMAC doubleheader at 4 p.m. More information can be found at unweagles.com and by following @unwbaseball on Twitter.
