ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern baseball team (7-14, 2-2) split its UMAC doubleheader with Bethany Lutheran (6-8, 1-1) Thursday at Reynolds Field. The Eagles – playing as the visiting team – won game one, 7-6, before falling in the nightcap, 9-5.
Freshman
Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) had a career day, going a combined 7-for-9 in the two games to lead the way.
Game One
The Eagles withstood a late rally from the Vikings, as
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) entered to pitch the final 1.1 innings to earn his second save of the week.
Andrew Simonson (Lakeland, Minn./Eastridge) (2-3) picked up the win after going the first five innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. Simonson fanned four.
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) and
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) both drilled two-run doubles, while
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) added a run-scoring two-bagger in the sixth. Piersma and
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) finished with three hits apiece and Morrell also came around to score twice.
Game Two
BLC jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and never looked back, winning game two, 9-5.
Piersma tallied four hits in five trips to the plate and scored two runs, while Krahn posted his second multi-RBI game of the day to go along with a 3-for-6 performance at the dish.
Ehnstrom got the nod on the bump, and absorbed the loss after allowing five earned runs on nine hits in five innings of work.
