ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern baseball team won the nightcap Tuesday night, 5-2, to gain a split with visiting Northland College in the conference opener at Reynolds Field. The Eagles – who are now 6-13 overall on the year – dropped game one, 16-8.
Game One
After the Eagles had cut the Lumberjack lead to 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth, the visitors scored a combined seven runs in the next two frames to take the opener, 16-8.
Northwestern pounded out 14 hits, but couldn't overcome eight errors in the field.
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) (0-4) was tagged with the loss, as the freshman right-hander surrendered four earned runs on just four hits.
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) and
Andrew Simonson (Lakeland, Minn./Eastridge) both posted three hits at the plate, while
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) blasted a solo homer in the third.
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and Spencer drove in two runs apiece.
Game Two
Northwestern scored all five of its runs in the third inning and rode the pitching of
Philip Wall (Juneau, AK./IDEA) to pick up the 5-2 win. Wall tossed 8.1 innings, allowing just one earned run while scattering 13 hits and striking out five.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) picked up the final two outs to earn the save.
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul),
Carlton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and
Cedric Cavazos (Chicago, Ill./Buffalo Grove) all tabbed two hits to lead the offense. Lindow also drove in a pair of runs.
The Eagles will return to Reynolds Field Thursday for a doubleheader with Bethany Lutheran. The series was originally scheduled to be played in Mankato but moved due to field conditions.
