ST. PAUL - The Northwestern Eagles split a doubleheader against Finlandia on Friday losing the first game 2-1 before winning the second game 25-5.
Game One
Wyatt Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Homeschool) started the game on the mound and gave up two hits and two runs over the seven innings while striking out five guys. He didn't give up a hit until the fifth inning which was when Finlandia scored both of their runs.
The Eagles scored in the bottom of the third after
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) doubled and then scored on a passed ball.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) contributed the only other hit that Northwestern had.
Game Two
The Eagles offense absolutely exploded in the second game of the doubleheader. Every starter scored at least two runs as Northwestern had 19 hits and drew 12 walks.
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) contributed four hits, and
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) reached base five times. The highlight of the game was Krahn's grand slam in the bottom of the sixth. Another highlight was when
Cedric Cavazos (Chicago, Ill./Buffalo Grove) hit a ball in the bottom of the fifth that bounced off the top of the chainlink fence and bounced back into play for a two-run double.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) reached base four times while
Eric Peterson (Coon Valley, Wis./Westby),
Daren Halvorson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul), and
Caleb Piersma (Pella, Iowa/Pella) each reached three times.
Andrew Simonson (Lakeland, Minn./Eastridge) started the game for the Eagles and struck out eight batters over five innings before
Nick Fladager (Eagan, Minn./Eagan) and
Quinton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) shut the door in the sixth and seventh.
The Eagles will be back at Reynolds Field Tuesday as they play host to Macalester. First pitch in the single, nine-inning contest is set for 4 p.m.
