UNW Suffers Road Loss At UW-Superior

SUPERIOR, WIS. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team was handed a tough road loss against the conference-leading University of Wisconsin-Superior [19-4, 14-0 overall] Wednesday evening. The Eagles fell to the home Yellowjackets by a final score of 59-43. With the loss, UNW drops to 11-11 on the season and 7-6 in UMAC play.

Both teams battled hard throughout the opening frame, with UWS grabbing hold of a tight 15-12 lead at the close of the first quarter. UW-Superior continued to shoot hot all throughout the second frame, building a strong 26-17 lead by the intermission break.

Down but not out, Northwestern shot just shy of 32 percent from the field on the half, while UWS stated a 36.0 shooting percentage from the floor.

Throughout the final two periods, the home Yellowjackets got the job done as they outscored the Eagles in both frames to secure the midweek victory, 59-43. With the win, UW-Superior captured its third-consecutive regular season UMAC title, respectively.

Concluding the evening battle, UNW shot 34.8 percent from the hardwood, while UWS sank 40.4 percent of their shots from the field. As a team, the Eagles also totaled an impressive 30 rebounds [8 OFF, 22 DEF], six assists, and six steals.

Junior Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) led the way with 17 points, going a perfect 3-for-3 from the charity stripe and hitting 7-of-14 from the field. Freshman Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) was the only other Eagle to reach double digits on the night, scoring 12 points for the squad. Tumbleson also finished the contest with four rebounds and three steals, while Landers snatched seven boards.

The purple and gold will continue conference play Saturday, February 10, when they host the College of St. Scholastica. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. inside the Ericksen Center. For more information, fans should visit www.unweagles.com.
