ST. PAUL – The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week lived up to its billing Saturday evening, as the University of Northwestern women's basketball team used a 21-point third quarter to defeat the visiting College of St. Scholastica, 53-47. The Eagles better their record to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in league play, while the Saints fall to 12-11 overall and 7-7 in conference games.
CSS made an early statement, building a 15-9 lead after the first quarter, but the Eagles found their groove in the second quarter to narrow the gap to 26-23 at the half. UNW's third-quarter surge proved to be the winning ingredient, as the Eagles outscored the visitors 21-12 in the frame before holding on for a 53-47 win.
Three Eagles were in double figures, as
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) hit 5-of-6 from the floor to finish with 14 points. She also grabbed five boards, dished out three assists and posted three steals.
Jessica Brown (Watford City, N.D./Watford City) had one of her strongest games of the year, finishing with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while
Alex Peterson (St. Paul, Minn. /Como Park) contributed 10 points off the bench.
UNW shot 42.9 percent from the floor and just 28.6 percent from long range.
