ASHLAND, WIS. - After its longest road trip of the season, the University of Northwestern men's basketball team proceeded to partake in its longest game of the season, defeating Northland College, 88-77, in double overtime on Saturday. With the win, the Eagles clinched an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) playoff berth, and improved to 11-10 on the year (9-3 in the UMAC), while the Lumberjacks fell to 9-12 overall and 5-7 in the UMAC. The win also marked UNW's ninth win in ten games, with the streak beginning with a January 3rd win over Northland.
Despite the long trip, Northwestern came out of the gates hot, shooting 65.2% from the field and 66.7% from three in the first half. However, the Eagles only led by two at the halftime intermission (36-34). UNW led by as many as nine in the second half, but the Lumberjacks wouldn't go away quietly at home, tying the game at 66 with 21 seconds left in regulation. The back-and-forth affair continued in the first overtime, capped off by a huge three-pointer by senior
Isaiah Rahier (Northome, Minn./Northome) with 18 seconds remaining, tying the game at 75. After a defensive stop to force double overtime, the Eagles built off the momentum from Rahier's shot and took control for the remainder of the contest, outscoring Northland, 13-2, in the final frame.
Sophomore
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) provided a monster game, racking up 22 points and 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Rahier excelled on both ends of the floor, finishing the afternoon with 18 points and four steals. The Eagles also got 17 points from
Brady Bellefeuille (Frazee, Minn./Frazee), as well as 11 points and six rebounds from
Caleb Hageman (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City).
Northwestern will again take to the road on Wednesday for a clash with Wisconsin-Superior. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm in Superior. Stay tuned to unweagles.com and follow @unwmbb on Twitter for all things Eagles basketball.
