ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team put together a strong comeback attempt Saturday, but it wasn't enough as they fell to the red-hot College of St. Scholastica Saints inside the Ericksen Center, 87-77. CSS has now won 10 straight and improves to 16-7 overall and 11-3 in league play, while UNW drops to 11-12 overall and 9-5 in loop action.
After an entertaining first half, CSS built itself an 18-point advantage with 9:11 to play in the second half before a 9-0 UNW run cut the deficit in half. The Eagles would get within six with 1:22 to play, but an old-fashioned three-point play for the Saints on the ensuing possession sealed the win.
The Eagles finished with four players in double figures, as
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area)'s double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds led the way.
Brady Bellefeuille (Frazee, Minn./Frazee) was on fire early, scoring 10 points in the contest's first few minutes before finishing with 15 points.
Caleb Hageman (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) chipped in 11 points and
Isaiah Rahier (Northome, Minn./Northome) added 10. Youngberg also added seven assists and Rahier tallied five helpers.
UNW shot it extremely well from deep, hitting 16-of-27 attempts (59.3 percent) while finishing 43.1 percent from the floor. The Eagles went 10-of-14 from long range in the second half.
The Eagles will have their final regular season road test Wednesday when they make the trip to Minnesota Morris for a 5:30 p.m. contest. Fans can find more information at unweagles.com and by following @unwmbb on Twitter.
