ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team welcomed Macalester College to the Ericksen Center for Tuesday night non-conference action. The Eagles put together a strong fourth quarter comeback, but fell short to the Scots, 57-50 in final scoring.
The Eagles lead the all-time head to head series with the Scots, 15-12 and have defeated them in the last five straight meetings prior to Tuesday night's contest.
After taking nearly 20 less shots than Macalester in first half play, Northwestern entered the half trailing by four (29-25). UNW cut the deficit to two early in the third quarter but the Scots responded, holding the Eagles to just seven points in the quarter and extending their lead to a game-best 11 points with 2:53 remaining in the third.
In resilient Eagle fashion, UNW put together a last chance comeback as sophomore
Jordan Sauve (Blaine, Minn./Blaine) hit a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining to cut the Macalester lead to five. In the next possession,
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) got her hands on a quick steal, setting
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) up for a layup to make it a three-point ball game with just 30 seconds on the clock.
The Scots managed to hang on to the lead, draining all four shots from the charity stripe to secure the win. Both teams move to 1-4 on the year heading into Thanksgiving break.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and
Megan Roberts (Greeley, Colo./Dayspring Christian Academy) led Northwestern offensively on the night, both totaling 10 points. Berglund added a team-high nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and seven blocks.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1 when they take on Bethel University. Follow Northwestern women's basketball online this season at
