ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team traveled South on Snelling for their first road contest of the season. The Eagles fell to a dynamic Hamline squad, 71-33 after struggling to overcome the Pipers persistent full-court press.
The Eagles drop to 1-2 overall as Hamline improves to 2-0 – the team's best start since 2008. Northwestern last faced the Pipers on Nov. 17, 2018 when they took down the MIAC rival, 45-36. The Eagles lead in all-time series with Hamline, 22-14.
Propelled by a group of first year players, the Pipers have put together a pair of dominant wins to start the year. The Eagles were held to single-digit scoring in three of the four quarters as Hamline forced 33 turnovers by applying aggressive full court pressure.
Northwestern evened things out in the second quarter, matching the opponents' 13 points of scoring. Unfortunately, the Eagles were plagued by 24% shooting and a 0-6 mark from three-point range in second half play.
Three Northwestern players finished with a team-best six points on the night including
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield),
Kelsea Lund (Madison, Minn./La qui Parle Valley) and
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow). Berglund added six rebounds and four blocks, while Lund dished out a team-best four assists.
The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 17 when they welcome Augsburg University to the Ericksen Center. Tipoff is slated for 1 PM.
