ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern began their second round of UMAC play Tuesday evening when welcomed Bethany Lutheran to the Ericksen Center. The Eagles came out on top, sweeping the Vikings in three sets with scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-11.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 10-0 in conference play and 15-5 overall. Bethany Lutheran falls to 6-13 overall, 4-6 in the UMAC.
The Eagles improved their play throughout the course of the match, hitting .194 in set one, .286 in set two and .368 in the final set.
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) led Northwestern offensively, tacking on 19 kills and hitting an impressive .536. She also picked up 15 digs in the match to record her fourth double-double this season.
Also notching double-digit kill totals was
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian), who finished with 11 in the match (.375).
Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville), who was named this week's UMAC Player of the Week, continued her defensive dominance, digging up 19 balls. Freshman standout setter,
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) dished out 41 assists in the three-setter (13.7/set).
Megan Rutt led all players for Bethany Lutheran, tallying 10 kills and adding five digs. The Vikings hit just .096 in the match.
