ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern volleyball team extended their undefeated UMAC streak to 11 on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 win over St. Scholastica. The Eagles hit .279 in the match and overcame a late third-set deficit to secure the sweep with sets scores of 25-16, 25-13 and 26-24.
With the win, Northwestern improves to 11-0 in conference play and 16-5 overall. The Saints fall to 7-13 overall, 5-6 in the UMAC.
The Eagles trailed 24-22 in the third set, but made an incredible four-point run led by two kills from freshman
Hope Kapelke (Ft. Atkinson, Wisc./Ft. Atkinson), a solo block by
Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) and a kill from Halvorsen.
Two Eagles posted double-digit kill totals on the day, led by
Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) who orchestrated a 16-kill, 15-dig and four-service ace performance. Halvorsen finished with a .433 attack average.
Also notching double-digit kill totals was
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian), who finished with 12 in the match (.320).
Freya Hansen picked up 11 digs in the match and standout setter,
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) dished out 34 assists and added 12 digs in the three-setter.
