SUPERIOR, Wis. -- The University of Northwestern women's volleyball team accomplished an amazing feat by winning sixty-five straight regular-season Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) matches. The Eagles' streak, which dates back to a five-set loss against Minnesota-Morris on Oct. 5, 2013 – finally came to an end on Tuesday evening as Northwestern suffered a 3-0 loss to a very solid UW-Superior team.
Northwestern drops to 19-7 overall and 12-1 in the UMAC. The Yellowjackets improve to 18-9 overall, 12-1 in conference play (their lone loss coming to UNW earlier this season). Northwestern last fell to Superior on Sept 5, 2014, however, the Yellowjackets were not UMAC members at that time.
Despite the three-set loss, the scores were decided by just two or three points each.
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) put together a strong showing for the Eagles, recording a career-best 21 kills and hitting a .486 attack average.
Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) and
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) added ten kills apiece. Gasch hit .474 – marking a very consistent evening for the Eagles middle blockers (Gasch and Fuglestad).
Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) tacked on a team-best 16 digs.
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) recorded 40 assists in the three-setter and added 12 digs.
The Eagles will resume conference action on Friday, Oct. 19 when they welcome North Central University to the Ericksen Center for a 7 p.m. match-up. Follow the Eagles online this season at
