Volleyball Splits in Saturday Non-Conference Action

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of Northwestern (19-6, 12-0 UMAC) took on UW-River Falls and UW-Oshkosh in Saturday quadrangular play at the Ericksen Center. The Eagles went 2-1 on the weekend, while Oshkosh grabbed a perfect 3-0 mark in quad play.

Northwestern overcame a set one loss to defeat River Falls before falling to Oshkosh in straight sets. Sets one and three were decided by a mere two-point differential.

Following a grueling five-set win over Saint Mary's Friday evening, the Eagles faced River Falls, having won the last five straight in head to head match-ups with the Falcons.
 
Northwestern was led offensively by Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) who posted another dominant showing. Halvorsen recorded 23 kills (.340), two service aces and 19 digs – her twelfth double-double this season and fourth straight.

 Kalley Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./Central Minnesota Christian) added 12 kills and 13 digs for the Eagles, while Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) led the team defensively with a career-best 30 digs.
 
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) dished out 47 assists in the four-setter. Schwitters continues to lead the NCAA in assists/set with 11.71.
 
Today's win puts Northwestern and River Falls tied up at six apiece in all-time records.

An unprecedented amount of Northwestern errors led to a three-set loss for the Eagles in Saturday's second match-up against UW-Oshkosh. With just a three-point spread (50-47), Northwestern did not go down easy.
 
Halvorsen put together another strong showing, leading the offense with 13 kills (.308).
 
Sydney Schwitters (Clara City, Minn./MACCRAY) orchestrated her thirteenth double-double on the year, tacking on 32 assists and 12 digs. Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) led UNW with 16 digs.
 
The Titans improved to 13-12 this season.
 
The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when they travel to Superior, Wis. to take on the Yellowjackets in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. Follow the Eagles online this season at www.unweagles.com
