ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team traveled north for another conference contest Saturday afternoon in Duluth and picked up a well-earned 72-68 win over the College of St. Scholastica. With the win, the squad rises to 4-9 on the season and 3-2 in UMAC play.
In what was a back-and-forth battle throughout the first 20:00 of play, both teams combated to the best of their abilities. Though the Saints held the advantage at the halftime break, 39-36, the Eagles still remained in the game.
The second half was just as intense as the first, as both teams exchanged the lead. With just over six minutes left in regulation, UNW took control and never looked back, clinching the mid-day victory, 72-68, over CSS.
On the contest, Northwestern shot just over 49 percent from the hardwood, which outshined St. Scholastica's 44.8 shooting percentage from the field. As a team, UNW also finished off the afternoon with 26 rebounds [6 OFF & 20 DEF], 14 assists, five steals, and three blocks.
Caleb Hageman (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) led four Eagles in double figures on the game, as the junior guard netted 19 points. Sophomore
Tanner Youngberg (Pocahontas, Iowa/Pocahontas Area) followed closely behind with 13 points, while Senior
Isaiah Rahier (Northome, Minn./Northome) recorded 12 and
Anderson Bazile Jr. (Houston, Tex./San Antonio Reagan) dropped 10. Youngberg also added 12 rebounds to his stat line to record a double-double, respectively.
The purple and gold will return to home court on Wednesday, January 10, to battle UW-Superior. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside the Ericksen Center. For more information, fans should visit www.unweagles.com.
