ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team hosted non-conference Finlandia University [5-17 overall] Saturday afternoon inside the Ericksen Center. The lady Eagles put themselves back in the win column as they took the game, 60-55, over the visiting Lions. With the victory, the squad improves to 11-8 on the season.
Finlandia grabbed hold of the first quarter, leading by a tight 12-10 score. Northwestern then went to work in the second period, tacking on 20 points to take a 30-18 advantage into the intermission break.
On the half, the Eagles shot just over 41 percent from the floor, which outshined the Lions 22.6 shooting percentage from the hardwood.
Northwestern powered through the final two frames, knocking down pivotal jumpers and long-range shots to secure the afternoon victory, 60-55, over Finlandia.
Concluding the contest, the Eagles shot 39.3 percent [22-of-56] from the field and 35 percent [7-of-20] from behind the arc. In addition, the purple and gold also totaled eight assists, five blocks, four steals, and had 14 points scored from off the bench.
Freshman
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) impressed the home crowd as she led all scorers with 15 points, going 7-for-18 on the mid-day game. She also finished off the afternoon with seven rebounds, three blocks, and one assist. Junior
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) [11 points] and Senior
Andrea Zimpel (Isle, Minn./Isle) [10 points] were the other two Eagles to tally double digits on the game. Tumbleson also added 10 boards to her stat line to finish with a double-double, respectively.
