ST. BONIFACIUS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 46-45 road contest against Crown College [8-9, 4-5 UMAC] Wednesday evening in St. Bonifacius. With the loss, UNW falls to 10-8 overall and 7-3 in conference play.
UNW wasted no time getting on the board, as the visiting team pushed a 16-7 lead in the first quarter. Throughout the second period, CC found its groove as they edged the Eagles in points [14-12], but it was Northwestern who held the advantage at the intermission break, 28-21.
Crown then went to work in the third, keeping the game close, but never gaining possession of the lead. With the game coming down to the final minutes in the fourth quarter, and a 42-42 tie game with 2:06 left on the ticker, CC used a few crunch time free throws and jumpers to secure the evening victory, 46-45.
Freshman
Rio Landers (Grand Meadow, Minn./Grand Meadow) and Junior
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) led all scorers with nine points apiece on the evening battle. Landers also noted a respectable four boards, one assist, and one steal, while Berglund noted two assists and one steal. Senior
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also had a good game, netting seven points for the Eagles. She also tallied three rebounds, one assist, four blocks, and one steal, respectively.
UNW shot 40.9 percent from the hardwood on the night's competition, which outshined CC's 30.7 percent from the floor.
