ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team was unable to overcome a strong second half performance from the conference-leading University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets (11-4, 7-0 UMAC) Wednesday night, as the Eagles fell 63-40. The Eagles fall to 7-7 overall and 4-2 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play.
Both teams struggled to find their groove early, as the Yellowjackets built a 12-5 lead after the first quarter and then took a 22-13 lead into the locker room after an evenly played second. UWS's big frame was its third, as the visitors outscored the Eagles 23-12 to build a 20 point advantage – a lead UNW would not overcome, falling 63-40.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) continued her strong play this season, as the junior poured in 19 points and pulled down 10 boards to notch a double-double.
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) was also in double figures, as the guard dropped in 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Tumbleson also swiped six steals, while
Andrea Zimpel (Isle, Minn./Isle) dished out six helpers.
UNW shot 31.5 percent from the floor and was unable to hit a shot from long range in 11 attempts. Northwestern held UWS to just a 36.8 shooting percentage.
The Eagles will continue conference play Saturday when they travel to New Ulm to take on Martin Luther. Tip-off is slated for 5 p.m. Fans can find more information at unweagles.com and by following @unwwbb on Twitter.
