ST. PAUL, MINN. – Opening up conference play, the University of Northwestern men's soccer team [1-0 UMAC] clinched a 5-0 victory over Bethany Lutheran College [1-3, 0-1 UMAC] in Wednesday's contest at Reynolds Field. With the win, the Eagles jump to 2-1-1 on the season.
Opening up the game on a strong note,
Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) buried the first goal, allowing the Eagles to boost an early 1-0 lead. Helping out in the action,
Joshua Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) tabbed the assist. The home teams strong offensive efforts continued, as Hintz netted UNW's second goal at the 20:30 mark to stretch the lead, 2-0, over BLC by the intermission break.
Topping off the first half, Northwestern noted eight shots [5 SOG], while Bethany Lutheran had a notable six shots [3 SOG].
Daniel Clotarie (Les Cayes, Haiti/Concordia Academy) made it a 3-0 ball game in the Eagles favor, as the senior midfielder fired one in five minutes into the second period, while Donat collected the assist. Scoring his first-ever collegiate goal,
Jakob Walther (Milan, MI./Milan) knocked one in with 19:30 left in regulation, extending UNW's lead, 4-0.
Freshman
Joshua Skarin (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo) came up big, as his first-ever collegiate goal lifted the Eagles to a 5-0 shutout victory over BLC. Skarin's goal was assisted by
Corbin Munger (Austin, Minn./Austin).
Securing the 5-0 win, Northwestern totaled 21 shots [12 SOG], which outshined Bethany Lutheran's eight shots [4 SOG].
UNW's stat leaders on the day's competition were Donat [6S / 1 SOG / 1G / 1A], Hintz [3S / 2 SOG / 1G / 1A], Clotarie [2S / 2 SOG / 1G], Walther [2S / 2 SOG / 1G], and Skarin [2S / 2 SOG / 1G].
