ST. PAUL, MINN – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team (0-0-1) kicked off its 2017 campaign with a home contest against Bethel University (0-0-1) Friday evening at Reynolds Field. The Eagle used two overtime periods to tie the Royals, 1-1.
Throughout the first 45:00 half, neither team was able to find the net, heading into the intermission break with a 0-0 score.
Taking on the second half with a fierce attack, UNW's
Daniel Clotarie (Les Cayes, Haiti/Concordia Academy) netted a soaring ball over the top of BU's keeper to put Northwestern in the lead, 1-0, over the visiting team. Bethel continued to make it interesting, as they then tapped in their first goal of the game with 13:50 left to play, equalizing the score 1-1.
Continuing to battle, both teams had to use two overtime periods to decipher a winner, but neither team could find the net before time ran out. The night's match settled in a 1-1 draw.
Clotarie led the squad with four shots (3 SOG) and one goal on the contest, while teammate
Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) totaled two shots (1 SOG), respectively. On the defensive end, goalkeeper
Turner Main (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) caught four saves for the Eagles.
As a team, UNW capped off the competition with a grand total of 13 shots (8 SOG), while BU finished with 19 (5 SOG).
