Eagles Battle Royals To 1-1 Draw

ST. PAUL, MINN – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team (0-0-1) kicked off its 2017 campaign with a home contest against Bethel University (0-0-1) Friday evening at Reynolds Field. The Eagle used two overtime periods to tie the Royals, 1-1.

Throughout the first 45:00 half, neither team was able to find the net, heading into the intermission break with a 0-0 score.

Taking on the second half with a fierce attack, UNW's Daniel Clotarie (Les Cayes, Haiti/Concordia Academy) netted a soaring ball over the top of BU's keeper to put Northwestern in the lead, 1-0, over the visiting team. Bethel continued to make it interesting, as they then tapped in their first goal of the game with 13:50 left to play, equalizing the score 1-1.

Continuing to battle, both teams had to use two overtime periods to decipher a winner, but neither team could find the net before time ran out. The night's match settled in a 1-1 draw.

Clotarie led the squad with four shots (3 SOG) and one goal on the contest, while teammate Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) totaled two shots (1 SOG), respectively. On the defensive end, goalkeeper Turner Main (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) caught four saves for the Eagles.

As a team, UNW capped off the competition with a grand total of 13 shots (8 SOG), while BU finished with 19 (5 SOG).

The purple and gold will return to Reynolds Field tomorrow where they will host Hamline University at 7 p.m. Fans can follow the live action at www.unweagles.com.
