ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern baseball team chalked up two wins Saturday over Finlandia University at Reynolds Field. The Eagles improved to 7-11 on the season, while the visiting Lions dropped to 2-12.
Game One
After being unable to generate any offense through the first five innings of Saturday's opener, the Eagles' bats came alive in the sixth, pushing across five runs to overtake the Lions, 5-2.
Carter Michaelson (South St. Paul, Minn./South St. Paul) got things started as the freshman delivered a run-scoring single to score
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South).
Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) then drove in a pair of runs with his single to give UNW its first lead at 3-2.
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) followed that up with a two-run shot over the left field fence to cushion UNW's lead. It was the first career home run for the UNW junior.
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) and
Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) both smacked a pair of doubles to lead the offense attack.
Micah Williams (Gulfport, Miss. /Christian Collegiate Academy) picked up his second consecutive win on the mound, as the left-hander didn't allow an earned run over six innings of work. Williams fanned six, while surrendering just six hits.
Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) earned his second save on the season, putting the Lions down in order in the seventh.
Game Two
Backed by
Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin)'s gem and a combined seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings, UNW completed the sweep.
Ehnstrom continued his stellar play both on the mound and at the plate, as the junior threw a three-hit shutout to pick up his third win of the season on the bump. The right-hander struck out six, while not issuing a walk. At the plate, Ehnstrom finished 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI. His two-run double in the fourth provided the first runs of the game for the Eagles.
Brett Reinhart (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) and
Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) both racked up two hits at the dish, while Reinhart also scored twice and
Christian Halbur (Richfield, Minn./Homeschool) posted a pair of RBI.
UNW pounded out nine hits in each of Saturday's games.
The Eagles will welcome non-conference foe Bethel University next Thursday for a single, nine-inning contest. First pitch at Reynolds Field is slated for 5 p.m. Fans can find more information on the baseball program at
