Baseball Falls Twice in Wednesday's Doubleheader With Gustavus

ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern baseball team (5-11) battled in Wednesday's doubleheader with Gustavus Adolphus (4-3), but the visiting Gusties grabbed a pair of wins at Reynolds Field. GAC took the opener, 6-4, before outlasting the Eagles in the nightcap, 14-10.

Game One
Northwestern took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Brett Reinhart (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) delivered a run-scoring single that plated Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls). The Gusties knotted the score in the top of the fourth, but UNW answered with an Aaron Krahn (Roseau, Minn./Roseau) RBI single in the bottom of the frame to reestablish its lead.

After Gustavus put up a two-spot in the fifth, Tyler Osborn (Clive, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) blasted a solo shot to even the score. The visitors would push a run across in the sixth and added two more in the seventh to account for their six runs.

Osborn cut into the GAC lead with his team-leading sixth homer of the season in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough as UNW dropped game one.

Henry Waage (Alexandria, Minn./Alexandria) was tagged with the loss on the mound, surrendering three earned runs on eight hits through six innings.

Game Two
The Eagles used a furious late-inning rally, but Gustavus took the high-scoring affair, 14-10. Trailing 12-2, UNW put together a six-run sixth inning to make things interesting before the Gusties added a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to increase their lead. Northwestern scored two in the bottom of the frame before running out of outs.

Ryan Sutterer (Anoka, Minn./Anoka ) smacked a pair of doubles en route to finishing 3-for-5 at the plate – the slugger also added three RBI. Braxton Lindow (Cannon Falls, Minn./Cannon Falls) and Bradley Spencer (Papillion, NE/Papillion South) also contributed three hits for the Eagles, while Brett Reinhart (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) and Nathan Ehnstrom (Aitkin, Minn./Aitkin) added a pair each.

Jake Franzen suffered the loss on the bump – as the sophomore went four innings, giving up three earned runs on four hits.

The Eagles will continue their 11-game homestand Saturday when Finlandia University visits Reynolds Field for a doubleheader. First pitch in game one is scheduled for 12 noon. Fans can find more information at www.unweagles.com.
