Morrell Eclipses 1000 Career Points In Big Win Over Finlandia

ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's basketball team notched a 95-64 win over Finlandia (4-17) Saturday afternoon in the Ericksen Center. With the victory, the Eagles improve to 15-6 overall and 10-2 in UMAC play.

UNW shot an outstanding 51.4% from the floor against the visiting team in the first 20:00 minutes of play, which helped the Eagles boost a 47-28 lead heading into intermission. Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) had the hot hands on the half, fronting the pack with 10 points, as teammates Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville), Peter Maring (Harris, Minn./Cambridge Christian), and Caleb Hageman (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) followed closely behind with 8 points apiece.

With a powerful offensive performance throughout the second period, six Eagles were able to finish in double digits. Sprenger dropped 14 points overall, while Gisler and Hageman concluded with 12, and Anderson Bazile with 11. Maring also had a strong showing on the contest, as he closed with 11 points and 10 rebounds to earn himself a double-double.

To end the remarkable game, Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) hit his 1000th career point to become the 26th player in program history to reach the milestone. The senior guard finished with 13 points and noted one steal – shooting 5-9 from the floor, 1-3 from the arch, and 2-2 from the free-throw line.

Northwestern capped off the competition by shooting 49.4% from the field – sinking 38-77 – while Finlandia finished by shooting 43.1% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles grabbed 49 rebounds 19 OFF & 30 DEF), dished 13 assists, snatched nine steals, and added three block to complete the mid-day battle.
