NEW ULM, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball (17-8, 12-4 UMAC) team notched a 67-66 road win over Bethany Lutheran College (12-13, 7-9 UMAC) Saturday afternoon. With the victory, the Eagles secured the No. 3 seed in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) postseason tournament, which will get underway next week Monday (Feb. 20).
The Eagles got off to a smooth start, outscoring the home team 20-18 in the first quarter. The next period was met by fierce offense, as UNW outshined MLC 15-12 to head into intermission with a 30-35 lead.
Ending the third quarter, Northwestern tacked on 21 more points to gain a 56-44 advantage. Though the Vikings put together a strong fourth set, outscoring the Eagles 11-22, the purple and gold hung on to clinch the 67-66 victory to close the regular season.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished 7-for-12 from the floor to lead a trio of Eagles in double figures, as the junior guard dropped 14 points on the night. Senior
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also put together a solid performance, contributing 13 points, while Senior
Emily VanLith (Minot, N.D./Our Redeemers) added a career-high 10 points.
Northwestern capped off the competition by hitting 55.8% from the field – sinking 29-52 – while Bethany Lutheran finished by shooting 34.4% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles grabbed 36 rebounds 7 OFF & 29 DEF), dished 14 assists, snatched seven steals, and added five block to complete the evening battle.
UNW will begin the second round of the UMAC postseason tournament next week Wednesday. The purple and gold are scheduled to play on the road, but who and where Northwestern will contest is still undetermined. For more information, fan can visit www.unweagles.com.
