MORRIS, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team [17-9 overall] fell to the second-seeded University of Minnesota-Morris Cougars [24-3 overall], 62-71, in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal contest Wednesday night.
In a closely contested first quarter, UMM took a 13-12 lead into the second frame. Northwestern then went on a run to take a 28-24 advantage into the locker room.
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) put together a solid performance in the first half, as the senior guard led the squad with 16 points – going 6-6 from the floor and 4-4 from behind the arc.
Ending the third quarter, UNW trailed UMM 49-37. Northwestern continued to battle, but Minnesota Morris hung on for the 71-62 victory. With the win, the Cougars advance to the championship round of the UMAC tournament, which will take place Saturday afternoon.
Stubbs finished 10-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-6 from behind the arch to lead all scorers, dropping a career-best 25 points on the evening. Senior
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also had an impressive night, contributing 10 points, while senior
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) also ended with 10. Tumbleson added and additional six rebounds, five assists, three steals and two block, while Berglund noted eight rebound and five assists, respectively.
Northwestern capped off the competition by hitting 39.3% from the field – sinking 24-61 – while Morris finished by shooting 40.7% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles grabbed 27 rebounds [7 OFF & 20 DEF], dished 16 assists, snatched 11 steals, and added six block to complete the evening battle.
