NEW ULM, MINN. – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team secured a 67-60 road win over Martin Luther College (9-15, 7-8 UMAC) Friday evening. With the victory, the Eagles improve to 16-8 overall and 11-4 in league play.
UNW's strong offensive efforts helped front a 17-12 lead at the close of the first quarter. Though the Eagles were outscored (14-18) in period two by the home team, the purple and gold headed into intermission with a 31-30 advantage.
Throughout a back-and-forth second half battle, Northwestern went on to overtake the Vikings in both the third and fourth quarter (19-17, 17-13), which allowed UNW to grab hold of a 67-60 road victory.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished 9-of-20 from the floor to lead a trio of Eagles in double figures, as the junior guard dropped 22 points on the night. Senior
Tiffany Stubbs (Ames, Iowa/Des Moines Christian) also put together a solid performance, contributing 14 points, while Junior
Andrea Zimpel (Isle, Minn./Isle) added a career-high 10 points.
Northwestern capped off the competition by hitting 35.3% from the field – sinking 24-68 – while Martin Luther finished by shooting 36.4% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles grabbed 55 rebounds (18 OFF & 37 DEF), dished 16 assists, snatched 10 steals, and added seven blocks to complete the evening match.
