ST. PAUL - Returning to the court Monday night at Macalester College, with full stomachs and rested legs, the University of Northwestern women's basketball team got back on the right track, exploding for 70 points in a 70-46 drubbing of the Scots.
After trailing by one after the first quarter, the Eagles came out firing in the second frame, outscoring Macalester, 25-11. UNW never looked back as it picked up its second win of the season to improve to 2-3. While the offense shone (49.1% FG, 38.5% 3FG), the Eagles' defense also impressed, holding Macalester to 24.6% from the field and 13% from three, while swiping 12 steals.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) did a little bit of everything for Northwestern, knocking down nine of 15 shots for 18 points, while adding nine rebounds, five steals, and four assists.
Andrea Zimpel (Isle, Minn./Isle) joined her backcourt mate in double figures, knocking down four three-pointers and both of her free throw attempts for 14 points.
Jessica Brown (Watford City, N.D./Watford City) provided a huge spark off the bench, racking up 10 points and seven rebounds down low.
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also saw her best game of the young season, contributing nine points.
The Eagles will return to the Ericksen Center on Wednesday night for a Snelling Avenue showdown with Bethel University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 PM.
