ST. PAUL - The University of Northwestern women's basketball team stayed hot after a dominant win at Macalaster, taking down Snelling Avenue rival Bethel University, 55-48, inside the Ericksen Center on Wednesday night. With the win, the Eagles improved to 3-3 on the season. The loss dropped Bethel's record to 3-2.
It was a close game the entire way, as neither team built up a lead of more than seven in the first three quarters. Bethel held a one point advantage entering the fourth frame, but the Eagles took over from there, thanks to some timely turnovers and clutch free throw shooting down the stretch. Northwestern finished the game with 11 steals, shot 75% from three, and 83.3% from the free throw line, while holding the Royals to 26.1% from three and keeping Bethel's three-headed scoring attack in check.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) once again led the way for UNW, as the junior poured in 17 points, to go along with six rebounds and four steals.
Alex Peterson (St. Paul, Minn. /Como Park) also excelled, dropping 14 points and snaring eight rebounds, despite playing most of the game at a three inch size disadvantage in the post.
Andrea Zimpel (Isle, Minn./Isle) and
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) contributed seven points apiece, with Tumbleson knocking down the game sealing free throws.
The Eagles will look to stay hot as they take their two-game winning streak across the border on Saturday for a 7 PM matchup with UW-Eau Claire. Stay tuned to unweagles.com and follow @unwwbb on Twitter for updates.
