ST. PAUL, MINN. – In Saturday's conference matchup against Northland College [2-8-1, 1-4-1 UMAC], the University of Northwestern men's soccer team defeated the visiting Lumberjacks, 5-0, on home turf. With the win, the Eagles advance to 6-3-2 overall and remain second in UMAC play with a 5-1-1 record.
The first 45-minute frame was well contested, as the scoreboard sat steady [0-0] up until the 26' mark. In thrilling fashion,
Joshua Hintz (New Brighton, Minn./Mounds View) found the net first to give UNW a 1-0 lead over NC. Helping out in the action was
Jakob Walther (Milan, MI./Milan), who was credited the assist.
Thirteen minutes later,
Lucas McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) made it a 2-0 ball game, as the freshman midfielder scored at the 31-minute mark. Hintz continued to make an impression, as he collected the assist.
Shortly following,
Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) knocked in the teams third, while teammate
Austin Myers (Chester, Virg./Thomas Dale) earned the assist, to give Northwestern a 3-0 advantage they would take into the intermission break.
On the half, the Eagles fired off an impressive 15 shots [9 SOG], while the Lumberjacks noted three shots [3 SOG].
With 24 minutes left in regulation, Hintz came up big, as he scored his second goal of the game off of a penalty kick to lift the score 4-0. Then, scoring his first goal on the season,
Joshua Robertson (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) tapped in the game-winning goal at the 83' mark, allowing Northwestern to clinch a 5-0 win over Northland.
Concluding the mid-day match, UNW totaled 27 shots [17 SOG], which outshined NC's eight shots [4 SOG].
Northwestern's stat leaders on the afternoon competition were Hintz [7S / 4 SOG / 2G / 1A], Donat [6S / 6 SOG / 1G], Robertson [2S / 2 SOG / 1G], and McCann [2S / 1 SOG / 1G].
