Second Half Surge Leads Eagles To Victory Over Knights

NEW ULM, MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer clinched a 3-2 victory over Martin Luther College (5-11, 4-6 UMAC) Saturday afternoon in New Ulm. With the win, the Eagles advance to 8-5-2 on the season and jump to 7-2-1 in UMAC play.

Taking on the first 45-minute frame, both teams took the field ready for action. UNW's Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) came out strong, as the senior forward tapped in the first goal of the game to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Helping out in the offensive action, teammate Joshua Robertson (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) tabbed the assist on Donat's goal.

Fourteen minutes later, MLC made it a 1-1 ball game, as the home team scored off of a penalty kick opportunity. Both teams had a few more chances on goal, but neither team's strong offensive efforts were enough to tack on another before the intermission break.

With the score equalized at the half [1-1], the Eagles totaled six shots overall, while the Knights posted eight.

At the 55-minute mark, Martin Luther raised the score, 2-1, but Northwestern maintained its momentum as they continued to fire off shots. By the 68', Donat buried two more goals for UNW to lift the score 3-2 in the Eagles favor. Contributing to the success, Northwestern's Daniel Clotarie (Les Cayes, Haiti/Concordia Academy) was credited an assist on one of Donat's goals, respectively.

Despite a rain delay with 13 minutes left to play in regulation, UNW managed to run away with the 3-2 comeback victory over MLC.

Capping off the afternoon contest, the Eagles recorded 13 shots [6 SOG], which topped the Knight's 12 shots [4 SOG].

UNW's game leaders on the mid-day match were Donat [8S / 4 SOG / 3G], Clotarie [2S / 2 SOG / 1A], Robertson [1A], and Austin Heil (Andover, Minn./Andover) [2S].

Northwestern will host Crown College on Wednesday, October 25, for its home finale. Kickoff is set for 7:15 p.m. at Reynolds Field. For more information on the men's soccer program, fans can visit www.unweagles.com and follow @unwmsoc on Twitter.
