ST. PAUL – The No. 9 University of Northwestern volleyball team (27-4, 14-0 UMAC) clinched at least a share of the UMAC regular season title with a sweep of visiting UW-Superior (16-10, 9-4 UMAC) Tuesday night inside the Ericksen Center. The win also marked No. 350 for head coach
Beth Wilmeth – she has averaged 25 wins per year in her 14-year tenure.
Northwestern hit an impressive .333 as a team on its way to 25-13, 25-23, 25-13 set wins. The Eagles posted 58 points to the Yellow Jackets' 37.
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) hit at a .353 clip on her way to 17 kills. She completed the double-double with 14 digs.
Mariah Halvorsen (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata),
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian),
Leesa Malone (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) and
Kaylee Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Homeschool) contributed to a very balanced attack – as the quartet all finished with seven kills. Malone also recorded a season-high 42 assists.
Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) posted a match-high 21 digs in the back row and
Abby Neuberger (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) tacked on 12, while
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) had three blocks in the middle to lead the defensive effort. Doering moves into second all-time in career digs, passing Steph Koth - who held the record before
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) broke it last week. Doering now has 2,030 career digs.
