ST. PAUL – Fans inside the Ericksen Center Wednesday night were treated to some excellent volleyball, as the No. 7 University of Northwestern volleyball team (24-3, 13-0) picked up an exhilarating five-set win over Minnesota Morris (20-6, 10-2). In addition to the victory,
Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) surpassed a milestone, as the senior became Northwestern's all-time leader in career digs. She now has 2,036 digs in her career, as she moved ahead of current assistant
Steph Halstensgard.
The win – which happened via set scores of 14-25, 25-20, 25-15, 21-25, 15-10 – also stretched UNW's winning streak to 19 matches and marked the 50th consecutive conference win for the Eagles.
The visiting Cougars set the tone early and cruised to a first set win before UNW responded with set wins in the second and third. Minnesota Morris rallied from a four-point deficit in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set. After UMM took a 4-2 lead in the fifth, UNW went on a 5-0 run and never looked back, winning the match with the 15-10 fifth-set win.
Peterson worked hard for her team-best 12 kills, while also posting 25 digs to earn a double-double. Libero
Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) had a strong night in the back row, racking up a match-high 28 digs and
Abby Neuberger (Chanhassen, Minn./Southwest Christian) (18) and
Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) (14) also reached double figures.
Kayla Tanner (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) provided a much-needed spark in the middle, flooring 11 kills, while
Kaylee Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Homeschool) added nine. Tanner also posted five blocks, while
Jenay Fuglestad (Maple Grove, Minn./Heritage Christian) and Peterson added three apiece.
Leesa Malone (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) posted 28 assists.
With the block being so strong on both sides, neither team hit exceptionally well, as UMM finished hitting .117 and UNW .115. The Cougars held a 14-10 advantage in blocks.
The Eagles will welcome Saint Mary's to the Ericksen Center Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest. Fans can find more information on the volleyball program at
