Fourth Quarter Dominance Earns UNW a 64-61 Win Over CSS

ST. SCHOLASTICA, MINN. – In what was a hard-fought road battle, the University of Northwestern women's basketball team soared to a 64-61 win over St. Scholastica Friday evening. Thanks to a large part group effort in the closing seven minutes of the contest, UNW outscored CSS 16-2 which helped secure the night's success. With the win, the squad advances to 11-6 on the season and 7-2 in UMAC play.

After being outscored in the first (22-24) and second (7-10) quarter of the match, the Eagles climbed their way back into play throughout the second half of the late afternoon contest.

Though St. Scholastica held a 35-29 lead at intermission, Northwestern wasted no time picking up the pace to finish off the last 20:00 of the game. The Eagles conquered the third quarter by outshooting the Saints 19-18, but still trailed 48-52.

In their best offense efforts, the fourth period attack lead UNW to triumph as they outscored the CSS 16-2 in the final seven minutes to secure a 64-61 victory in their favor.

Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) had an outstanding night as the junior guard dropped 23 points for the Eagles, and also snatched eight rebounds, tabbed three blocks, marked three assists, and grabbed one steal. Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also shined in the evening madness, as she closed the game with 16 points, caught six rebounds, took six steal, and noted one assist.

Northwestern capped off the night by shooting 44.4% from the field – sinking 26-59 –  while St. Scholastica finished by shooting 31.0% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles also grabbed 40 rebounds (13 OFF & 27 DEF), snatched 11 steal, tallied eight assists, and noted four blocks to complete the contest.

The purple and gold will take on the UW-Superior Yellowjackets –  who are currently undefeated and seated in first place in UMAC play (9-0) – tomorrow afternoon. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m. Fans can find live links to follow the mid-day action at unweagles.com.
