ST. SCHOLASTICA, MINN. – In what was a hard-fought road battle, the University of Northwestern men's basketball team was upsetted 74-75 by St. Scholastica in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week Friday evening. With the loss, the squad drops to 12-5 on the season and 8-1 in UMAC play.
The Saints put together a strong first-half showing as they boosted a 33-38 lead over the Eagles heading into intermission.
Throughout the second half, Northwestern gave their best offensive power – outscoring the home team 41-37 – but fell short in their attempt to take the 74-75 contest from St. Scholastica.
Having the hot hands of the night,
Porter Morrell (Elk River, Minn./Home School) lead the pack with 21 points, while also adding three assists and four rebounds to conclude.
Cody Sprenger (Grey Eagle, Minn./Long Prairie-Grey Eagle) (18 points),
Will Gisler (Stewartville, Minn./Stewartville) (13 points), and
Peter Maring (Harris, Minn./Cambridge Christian) (10 points) also made strong contributions on the night's competition, as the fellow seniors each hit double figures.
Northwestern capped off the night by shooting 48.3% from the field – sinking 29-60 – while St. Scholastica finished by shooting 47.1% from the floor. As a team, the Eagles also grabbed 32 rebounds (7 OFF & 25 DEF), dished 12 assists, snatched six steals, and noted one block to complete the contest.
