ST. PAUL – The University of Northwestern women's basketball team used a strong defensive effort to defeat visiting Trinity Bible College (5-9), 67-37, in a non-conference contest Tuesday evening inside the Ericksen Center. The Eagles improve to 10-6 on the season with the win.
UNW flexed its muscle early, jumping out to an early 18-6 lead after the first frame. The Eagles wouldn't let up from there, holding their opponent to a season-low 19.6 shooting percentage en route to picking up the victory.
Amy Berglund (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) finished 8-of-16 from the floor to lead a trio of Eagles in double figures, as the junior poured in 16 points.
Taryn Tumbleson (Sherburn, Minn./Martin County West) also had a solid outing, contributing 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting, while
Logan Retzlaff (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter) chipped in 11 points off the bench. Berglund also grabbed nine boards.
Northwestern ended the night hitting 39.2 percent of its shots from the floor. Both teams struggled from long range, going a combined 4-for-36 from downtown.
The Eagles will return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) play Friday at the College of St. Scholastica. Tip-off is slated for 5:30 p.m. in Duluth.
