ST. PAUL- MINN. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team (0-2-1) fell short, 3-2, in a hard-fought battle with the University of St. Thomas (3-0-1) at Reynolds Field Wednesday night. The Eagles gave the Tommies all they had, but UST found a way to run away with the double-overtime victory.
After 34:00 minutes of play, UNW's
Matthew McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) was able to net the first goal of the game to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. McCann marked three shots and three shots on goal to wrap up the night's challenge.
Closing the first period, Northwestern's defensive line put up a fight, as they were able to hold St. Thomas to a scoreless half. The Eagles were able to tally five shots and three saves heading into halftime.
Leading into the second, the Tommies sought out to even the scoreboard. Within the first 20:00 minutes, UST fired four shots to Northwestern's one. The Tommies then tied the game 1-1 at the 66' mark.
As more than 15 minutes passed, both teams were in a fight for the finish. Though St. Thomas led 2-1 with seven minutes remaining, UNW's
Derrick Aminga (Andover, Minn./Andover) knocked in an assisted pass from
Josiah Donat (Elk River, Minn./Washtenaw Christian Academy) to make it a 2-2 ball game. The last two minutes ran out, as both teams prepared to faceoff overtime.
The first overtime session was filled with remarkable efforts, as boths teams allowed no goals to be scored. The second and final overetime was the final draw for the Eagles, as the Tommies managed to pull off a 3-2 victory in double-overtime, scoring with just over four minutes remaining in the contest.
