Cleope’s First Half Goals Lift UNW To 2-0 Win Over Augsburg

ST. PAUL, MINN. — The University of Northwestern men's soccer team celebrated its first win on the season, as they were able to capture a 2-0 victory against Augsburg College Monday evening.

Storming the field ready for action, Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) netted UNW's first goal of the night at the 17' to give the Eagles an early 1-0 lead. It was the first goal on the season for the senior midfielder.

The first period battle continued as both teams tried to fend off one another. Cleope's momentum wasn't done yet, as he then buried Northwestern's second to stretch the lead 2-0 heading into halftime.

UNW defense remained rock solid the entire second period, as the game resulted in a 2-0 score in the Eagles favor. The team noted 11 shots, 8 SOG, and goalkeeper Turner Main (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) caught five saves to conclude the match.

Having strong showings on the night were Mark Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) (2S / 2 SOG), Ethan Hart (Marshall, Minn./Marshall) (1S / 1SOG), Derrick Aminga (Andover, Minn./Andover) (1S / 1SOG/ 1 assist), and Joshua Robertson (Excelsior, Minn./Southwest Christian) (1S).

The team will host Carleton for its next competition on Wednesday, September 21st, at Reynolds Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Fans can visit unweagles.com for more information.
