Eagles Top St. Thomas; Fall to UW-La Crosse Saturday

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 18 University of Northwestern volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the Augsburg Tournament, as the Eagles fell to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (8-0), 3-1, before bouncing back with a 3-1 victory over the University of St. Thomas (4-4).

Match One vs UW-La Crosse (23-25, 19-25, 28-26, 19-25)
After falling behind two sets to none, the Eagles rallied for a hard-fought 28-26 win in set three. UW-La Crosse – who is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll – secured the win with a 25-19 win in set four.

Lindsey Peterson (Sheffield, Iowa/West Fork) pounded down 13 kills and Freya Hanson (Otsego, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) also reached double digits, tallying 11. Leesa Hulstrand (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) – who finished with nine kills – hit an eye-popping .563. Shanay Gonder (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Washington) and Anna Gasch (Waverly, Iowa/Waverly-Shell Rock) had four blocks apiece. Peterson notched a double-double after racking up 20 digs. Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) added 15 digs.

Match Two vs St. Thomas (17-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23)
After dropping the opening set, the Eagles rolled off three-straight set wins to pick up the victory.

Peterson (17), Hanson (14), Gonder (12) and Gasch (12) all hit double figures in kills and Kaelyn Kilbo (Delano, Minn./Delano) contributed 29 assists. On the defensive side of things, Doering recorded 24 digs, while Gonder, Hulstrand and Kayla Tanner (Anoka, Minn./Anoka) were dominant at the net, posting four blocks each.

For her weekend efforts, Jackie Doering (Charles City, Iowa/Charles City) was named to the All-Tournament team.
