NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The University of Northwestern men's soccer team gave No. 15 St. Olaf College all they could handle in the season opener for both teams Thursday, as the Eagles and Oles played to a 1-1 draw at Rolf Mellby Field.
After a scoreless first 25 minutes of play, junior
Matthew McCann (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) gave the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 27'. McCann's goal came off of an assist from freshman
Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West).
Less than two minutes later, St. Olaf's Jovan Carter found the back of the net for the equalizer to knot the score at 1-1.
Neither team was able to put another goal on the board and the contest headed to extra time. The Oles and Eagles remained gridlocked throughout the two overtime sessions and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
Turner Main (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) had an outstanding showing in goal, as he grabbed nine saves to stymie the Ole offense.
Chris Cleope (Waterloo, Iowa./Waterloo West) fired three shots, while McCann finished the match with a pair of shot.
The Eagles will return to Reynolds Field next week where they will host the University of St. Thomas on Sept. 7. More information can be found at
